keep up with
kee-pup with
p 与 up 连读。
everyone's
ev'ryone's

has to
hasta /ˈhæstə/
浊音清化:has to → /hæstə/。同 have to → hafta, used to → useta
get to
getta /ˈɡeɾə/
important
impor'nt /ɪmˈpɔːrʔnt/

n-its
and 弱读到 /n/,再与 it's 连读
centers around
center-zaround
depending on
depending-on
-ing 的 /ŋ/ 与 on 连读成 /ŋɒn/
the answer is in
thee-answer-i-zin
chassis
/ˈʃæsi/

Grammar · 6 Points

What you need to know to keep up with this crazy, expensive sport that everyone's suddenly obsessed with.
But it's also a look at the bigger question - Why do this?
This isn't just a car race. This is a space program, for the road.
not just X / is Y
NASCAR has the least family resemblance… IndyCar and F1 look more related… But there's one really important difference
the competition… centers around the car itself. Not just how you race it, but also how you build it - and rebuild it, again and again and again

01get to vs have to「有机会做」vs「不得不做」

讲解本期把这两个词刻意并置,是全篇最精巧的一处:every team has to design and manufacture their own cars(不得不)→ the best part is that they get to IMPROVE the cars(得以、有机会)。

have to = 义务,带负担感。

I get to work from home(我可以在家办公,真好)和 I can work from home(我能在家办公)情绪完全不同。
I get to meet her tomorrow!
You have to fill out this form.
02not just X, but (also) Y

This isn't just a car race. This is a space program./Not just how you race it, but also how you build it。

变体not merely / not simply(书面)/it's less about X and more about Y(更柔和)/X, sure — but really Y(口语)

It's not just a tool, it's a platform.
It's less about speed and more about consistency.

四种用法① 同位语解释:the same frame — or “chassis” — the DW-12(给术语补个通俗说法)② 强调重复:the bigger question — the HUGE question —(同一物换个更重的说法)③ 重述升级:so much technological effort into F1 — into entertainment?(把前项换成更尖锐的定性)④ 追加递进:how you build it — and rebuild it(破折号后追加一个把前项推进一步的动作)

补注同样的「停顿感」也可以用逗号(a space program, for the road)或省略号(Or… not)制造,破折号只是其中最重的一种。

The result — and this surprised us — was the opposite.
He said yes. Or… sort of.

造词法-looking(看起来像):a weird-looking bird/-shaped(形状像):an L-shaped room/-like(性质像):a dream-like quality/-ish(有点像):greenish

It's a doughnut-shaped building.
He gave me a funny-looking smile.
05the reason (why) …

讲解it's the reason F1 specifically is such a big deal,注意没有 why,也没有 that。

三种写法the reason why it works(传统)/the reason that it works(正式)/the reason it works(最自然)

绝不能写 the reason is because 这是英语写作里被批评最多的冗余。正确:The reason is that… This is because…
That's the reason I called.
The reason is that we ran out of time.

F1 specifically is such a big deal(是 F1 而非别的)/the competition actually centers around the car(和你以为的不同)/the competition here is mostly in how you race(主要但不全是)。

Only I saw him(只有我看见)≠ I only saw him(我只是看见而已)≠ I saw only him(我只看见他一个)。

That's actually an ale
This specifically is what I meant.
It's actually simpler than it looks.

manufacturemanu-(手)+ facere(做)
resemblancere-(再)+ similis(相似)
competitioncom-(一起)+ petere(追求)
同根 tekhnē:technique, technical, architect(arch-首席+tekton 工匠)。
chassis法语 châssis(框架)← 拉丁 capsa(盒子)
cockpitcock(公鸡)+ pit(坑)
rookie可能是 recruit(新兵)的讹变
体育界最常用:rookie season, rookie of the year。
obsessob-(对着)+ sedere(坐)
日常绝大多数用 be obsessed with(本期即此,开口说话按这个来);be obsessed by 同样成立,多用于强调「被某个念头缠住」的被动意味(obsessed by the fear of failure),读到时别当成错句。

Collocations

keep up with[/kiːp ʌp wɪð/]
「跟得上」,三个含义:① 跟上速度/进度(keep up with the class)② 跟进资讯(keep up with the news)③ 保持联系(keep up with old friends)。
区分 catch up with(追上,暗示原本落后了)和 put up with(忍受)
I can't keep up with all the updates.
a big deal[/ə bɪɡ diːl/]
It's not a big deal=没什么大不了。
同族:What's the big deal?(有什么大不了的?带不耐烦)、make a big deal out of it(小题大做)
Landing that client was a big deal for us.
pour money into[/pɔːr ˈmʌni ˈɪntuː/]
本期还扩展到 pour technological effort into。
同族:throw money at(乱砸钱,更贬义)、invest in(中性)、sink money into(砸进去打了水漂)
They've poured millions into this project.
in return[/ɪn rɪˈtɜːrn/]
The answer is in what we get in return。
区分 in return(作为回报)/in turn(依次、反过来)/return to(返回)。
She helped me, and I gave her a ride in return.
center around / center on[/ˈsentər əˈraʊnd/]
同族:revolve around(更强调「一切都绕着它转」)
The debate centers around one question.
depending on[/dɪˈpendɪŋ ɒn/]
本期用它做了个精彩的反转:they get to improve the cars… Or… not, depending on how they do。
同族:it depends(看情况,可单独成句)、dependent on(形容词)、that depends on whether…
We'll leave at six or seven, depending on traffic.

So let's get into it. This is “[主题], explained for [受众]”
What you need to know to [收益] this [形容词1], [形容词2] [事物]
that everyone's suddenly obsessed with
So let's get into it. This is “F1, explained for rookies.” What you need to know to keep up with this crazy, expensive sport that everyone's suddenly obsessed with.

But 转折 → 反问 → not just / is 对称句 → 一个出人意料的比喻。

But it's also a look at the bigger question here - which is: Why [
The answer is in what we get in return
This isn't just [低估的定义]. This is [升级的定义], for [限定]
But it's also a look at the bigger question here — which is: Why do this? … The answer is in what we get in return. This isn't just a car race. This is a space program, for the road.

This isn't just a chat app. This is a filing cabinet, for conversations.
The answer is in what we get in return.

If you're new to [X], you might know its [关系] cousins

「a space program for the road」为什么是个好比喻

反过来看,中国学习者在英语写作里最常用的比喻是 like a double-edged sword、the tip of the iceberg,它们全都是死喻(dead metaphor),母语读者读到时不会产生任何画面。

这 92 秒里没有一个 kind of、没有一个 I don't know,和上一课的 vlog 形成鲜明对比。
